Punta Cana beach with palm trees and white sand

Punta Cana All-Inclusive Resorts Guide

Punta Cana is the Dominican Republic's most popular destination for a reason. Over 30 miles of white sand beaches, dozens of all-inclusive resorts, and direct flights from nearly every major US city make it the easiest Caribbean getaway for American travelers. I live about four hours west in Santo Domingo and visit the Punta Cana resort corridor regularly. Here is what you need to know before booking.

Bavaro

The main resort strip. Home to Hard Rock, Dreams, Barcelo, and Iberostar properties. The widest selection of resorts, the most restaurants outside the gates, and the best nightlife in the area.

Best for: Families, first-timers

Uvero Alto

About 30 minutes north of Bavaro. Where the luxury adults-only resorts hide. Excellence, Zoetry, and CHIC by Royalton are all here. Quieter beaches, fewer crowds, and a more premium feel.

Best for: Couples, honeymoons

Cap Cana

The exclusive gated community south of the airport. Hyatt Zilara, Secrets, and the upcoming Aman are here. Premium pricing, immaculate grounds, and a marina with restaurants that rival anything in the Caribbean.

Best for: Luxury seekers, golf

Getting to Punta Cana

Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) receives direct flights from New York (JFK, EWR, LGA), Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta, Charlotte, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, and Houston. Flight time from the East Coast is about 3.5 hours. From the Midwest, expect 4 to 5 hours.

Most resorts offer airport transfers for $30 to $50 per person each way. Private transfers run about $60 to $80 for a sedan. If you plan to explore beyond the resort, renting a car makes sense, though driving in the DR is not for the faint of heart.

The best time to visit is December through April (dry season), but shoulder months like November and May offer the best value with mostly clear weather. Hurricane season peaks August through October, and while direct hits are rare, rain is more frequent.
